Students enrolled in the Level 400 program at the University of Education, UEW, have suggested that recent difficulties with information technology faced by the university may be related to an inability to post students' ongoing evaluations on the students site.
During a demonstration that took place today, the students accused management and the government of politicizing the day-to-day operations of the university. They also stated that the government and the university had conducted an investiture for Professor Afful Brony while the case of the removed Vice Chancellor, Professor Avoke, was still pending in court.
According to the students, the University students handbook states that no new examination should be conducted when the results of previous ones had not been displayed on students' portal. As a result, the students were perplexed as to why university management was still intent on conducting the exams even though none of their exam results from level 100 to this point had been published.
"It is an insult to the IT department and the lecturers in ICT if we have professionals like these but could not solve our own internal IT problems, they might have their own business reasons, but we are suffering," they emphasized. "If we have professionals like these but could not solve our own internal IT problems, it is an insult to the IT department and the lecturers in ICT."
They voiced their disappointment that six of their fellow protesters had been detained by the combat police that had been dispatched to the school, which, in their opinion, is a clear indicator that the authorities seek to brutalize them for exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate.
According to them, the people who were receiving scholarships were cause for concern. They made the following statement: "Such students have lost their sponsorship as a result of the university's failure to publish the performance of students on the portal for sponsors to determine the performance of students, to convince sponsors whether to redraw or continue to offer such support to students based on their performance."
The students who are scheduled to begin their examinations today have maintained that they would not write the tests unless their demand for the publishing of past results is satisfied. The exams are scheduled to begin today.
