One of the reasons President Nana Akufo-Addo was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Sorbonne University is because of his work to establish a program that makes senior high school education free for all students.
According to the university, further reasons include his leadership in the battle against COVID-19, his dedication to promoting peace within the West African Region, and the promotion of democratic ideals in Ghana. In addition, the institution cited his leadership in the fight against COVID-19.
On Monday, October 10, 2022, Mr. Akufo-Addo was honored with the conferral of an honorary doctorate degree by one of the most renowned educational institutions in both Europe and the rest of the globe.
As a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Sorbonne University, he was overjoyed to be in the same company as Nelson Mandela, Pablo Picasso, Kofi Annan, and Amartya Sen, all of whom had previously been awarded such a degree.
This is the fourth Honorary Doctorate Degree that will be presented to the President. The first was an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree, which was presented to him in May 2016 by the renowned Fort Hare University of South Africa; the second, which was presented in December 2017 and was an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the University of Liberia; and the third, which will be presented in May 2021 by the University of Cape Coast.
The President addressed the gathering and stated that African leaders have a responsibility to work together with the people of their respective countries to construct more equitable societies. These societies should ensure that women, children, and those who are the most vulnerable are treated in an appropriate manner.
According to him, "societies where everyone, regardless of their incomes, beliefs or ethnic origins, can have equitable and guaranteed access to the goods essential to the development of every individual and of society as a whole: access to water, food and quality care, access to energy, access to education, access, in short, to the decent life to which every free being can and must aspire."
