Approximately 80,000 Ghanaian girls aged 12 to 17 are married or living with a guy. – GSS

At the national level, there are 79,733 females in Ghana between the ages of 12 and 171 who have been in union.

According to the Population and Housing Census of 2021, they are either married or cohabitating with a guy in some capacity (PHC).

Out of this total, there are 25,999 young women who are eligible to attend junior high (12 to 14 years).

The areas of the North East (13%), Savannah (10.9%), and Northern (10.6%), all of which have rates that are more than twice as high as the national average (4.0%), have the greatest proportion of females who have ever joined a union.

In spite of the fact that universal primary education is both free and mandatory for all children, there are still 244,731 females between the ages of 6 and 14 who have never set foot in a classroom. The Northern Region has the greatest number of females who have never attended school (73,516), followed by the Savannah Region (27,930) and the North East Region (22,857) respectively. Of these girls, three out of every ten of them are located in the Northern Region. These three regions also have the highest percentage of girls who are not currently attending school (either because they have never attended or because they have stopped attending in the past). Savannah has the highest percentage of girls who are not currently attending school (40.2%), followed by the North East Region (29.3%) and the Northern Region (28.5%). The national number is 7.8%, which translates to 285,271 girls between the ages of 6 and 14 who are not participating in formal education. Rural regions are home to 75.8% of the country's out-of-school six to fourteen-year-old female population, with three of every four females not attending school.

In addition, there are 99,150 females under the age of 15 who are participating in economic activity, and 49.7% of them are not attending school. The Northern (22,647), Oti (17,694), and North East (9,153) areas each have the largest percentage of girls involved in economic activity. Of these three regions, the Northern region has the highest proportion of economically active girls.

On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, which takes place today, October 11th, 2022, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has presented these numbers, which are derived from the dataset of the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

The purpose of this project is to bring attention to the obstacles that impede young women from realizing their full potential, such as early marriage and a lack of access to educational and other possibilities.
