E/R: Accident-prone Apirede-Somanya road shut down by DISEC

In the Eastern Region, the Okere District Security Council, also known as DISEC, has taken measures to combat the rising number of accidents that have been reported on the Apirede-Somanya highway.

Over the last several weeks, the bustling route has been a hot zone for accidents, resulting in the loss of multiple lives.

On Friday, a Sprinter bus that was traveling from Koforidua to Aflao was engaged in a terrible accident that occurred after it somersaulted many times. The bus was on its way to Aflao.

Unfortunately, six persons passed away at the scene of the accident, while around 18 additional passengers had significant injuries and needed to be evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment.

A similar tragedy occurred one month ago when a bus carrying four people from the University of Education - Winneba (UEW) was involved in an accident. The victims were a professor and three students from the university.

Because the Okere District Security Council (DISEC) is concerned about the high number of accidents that have occurred on the Apirede-Somanya route, they have made the decision to temporarily block the road to traffic.

"The general public and motorists that ply the Apirede – Kwamante – Somanya Route are being advised of the Temporal closure of the road by the District Security Committee (DISEC) from 7th October 2022," said the announcement from DISEC, which was signed by the chairman Daniel Kenneth. Because of the high number of deadly incidents that take place on the roads, it is now imperative that we take this step.

While the District works along with Feeder Roads and the National Route Safety Commission to enhance the road's safety, DISEC is recommending that drivers who are headed to Somanya and farther afield use the Adukrom-Aseseeso-Trom Junction road.

According to the statement released by DISEC, "We are requesting the general public and driver to bear with us as it is in the interest of averting the deadly accidents on that route and preserving lives."
